# Email Warm-up: how it works

> The mutual warm-up network, what the deliverability percentage means, and how it feeds your sending limit.

Warm-up puts a mailbox into a mutual network of real mailboxes that send to each other and reply, so it builds a sending reputation before you point campaigns at it.

The flame icon in the **Warm-up** column on Email Accounts opens a dialog for that one mailbox. On a mailbox with no warm-up it opens as **Create Warm-up** and starts with **Warm-up Strategy**, a set of presets that fill in the numbers for you. On a mailbox that already has one it opens as **Manage Warm-up**: no strategy presets, and a **Delete warm-up** button in the bottom-left corner. Everything between those two ends is the same either way: **End Date**, **Reply Rate**, **Starting Volume**, **Daily Volume Increase** and **Daily Sending Goal**.

<Screenshot id="email-accounts/email-warm-up--sender-column" url="/senders" alt="The Warm-up column on the Email Accounts table, one flame icon per mailbox row, sitting between Daily Usage and Status" caption="Every mailbox gets a flame whether or not it has a warm-up yet. The percentage only appears beside it once a running warm-up has a reading." />

## How it behaves

### Gmail and Google Workspace mailboxes are not warmed here

Google's terms do not allow it, and the product says so in a blue **Gmail/Google Workspace Notice** above the warm-up list and above the create form. The create form's mailbox list leaves Google accounts out, so there is nothing to pick there. [Google warm-up policy](/en/email-accounts/google-warmup-policy) covers what to send from instead.

### The percentage is about warm-up mail, not your campaigns

It is a deliverability reading: the share of a mailbox's warm-up messages that landed in the inbox rather than being marked as spam. Campaign email is not part of it. Warm-up traffic is measured on its own.

Where the reading comes from depends on the mailbox. When it is linked to a warm-up provider, the figure is the one that provider reports for it. When it is not, the app works one out from that mailbox's own warm-up messages.

Both lists show **TBD** instead of a number until there is something to show. A warm-up under a day old always reads **TBD** there, however busy it has been, and one whose reading comes back empty keeps reading **TBD** however old it is. Once there is a number, its colour is the quick version: green when delivery is strong, amber in the middle, red when it is weak.

The standalone list at `/warmup` gives every warm-up its own row, with **Sent Today** and the same reading side by side.

<Screenshot id="email-accounts/email-warm-up--list" url="/warmup" alt="The standalone Warm-up list: a Google warm-up notice at the top, a search field and an Add Warm-up Account button, and a table of three mailboxes with Sent Today, Deliverability and Status columns, two rows reading Active and one Paused, all three still showing TBD for deliverability" caption="A warm-up that started today looks exactly like this: sending, with nothing yet to report." />

### A warm-up has its own four states, not the mailbox's status

This is the warm-up's own lifecycle, separate from the mailbox's Active, Paused or Error status. A mailbox keeps whatever status it already has for the whole time its warm-up runs.

| State | What it means |
| ------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Pending** | Scheduled to start later; nothing sends until its start date arrives |
| **Active** | In its window and not paused |
| **Paused** | Held: no warm-up email sends until it is resumed |
| **Finished** | Its end date has passed |

Pausing and resuming happen on the standalone list, and only in bulk: tick one or more rows and use **Pause** or **Activate** on the selection bar, which needs a role that can change warm-ups. There is no pause control on an individual row, and the flame's dialog does not offer one either: it edits the volumes, the reply rate and the end date, and it can delete the warm-up, but it cannot pause or resume it.

### Smart Daily Limit needs the provider link, not the percentage

Past its quarantine, a mailbox that is not linked to a warm-up provider gets no calculated limit from [Smart Daily Limit](/en/email-accounts/smart-daily-limit) at all: the engine stops at that check, before it reads any deliverability, and leaves the stored limit alone. [Starting a warm-up](/en/email-accounts/create-a-warm-up) is what makes that link, on a platform where a warm-up provider is switched on.

Inside the quarantine window the link makes no difference: an account Smart Limit is running on has a limit of 0 until the window closes, warm-up or no warm-up. [Quarantine and ramp-up](/en/email-accounts/quarantine-and-ramp-up) covers that first stretch.

### Every warm-up has a report page, and nothing links to it

There is no control anywhere in the product that opens it. The closest you get is **Edit** on a warm-up's row, which puts that warm-up's id in the address bar at `/warmup/<id>`; swap the end of the address for `/view` and you land on the report. It holds three cards: a **Monthly Report** bar chart of inbox against spam day by day, with a forecast of what is still to send; a **Reply Rate** ring against the target you set; and a **Deliverability** card that breaks the reading down by the mail provider on the receiving end, so you can tell landing well everywhere from struggling in one place. The note under that card names the target to aim for, and it is high. This is a figure you want near the top of its range, not merely out of the red.

<Screenshot id="email-accounts/email-warm-up--view" url="/warmup/42/view" alt="One warm-up's own report: a Monthly Report bar chart with no send activity, a Reply Rate ring reading TBD against its target percentage, and a Deliverability card with its ring but no per-provider tiles" caption="The three cards fill in as the warm-up exchanges mail. Per-provider tiles appear only once the network has sent to those providers." />

## Limits

| | |
| ---------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Warm-up's own states | **Pending**, **Active**, **Paused**, **Finished**, separate from the mailbox's own status |
| What the percentage measures | The share of a mailbox's warm-up messages that landed in the inbox rather than spam |
| Before there is a reading | **TBD**, always for the first day, and for as long as nothing has been exchanged |
| What **Sent Today** counts | Warm-up messages only; campaign email is never counted there |
| Pausing or resuming | Bulk selection on the standalone list only, for a role that can change warm-ups |
| Per-mailbox report | `/warmup/<id>/view`, reachable by address only |
| Smart Daily Limit | Past quarantine, calculates nothing for a mailbox with no warm-up provider linked to it |
| Gmail / Google Workspace | Not available for warm-up |
