# AI Engine (standalone lead generation)

By the end of this page you have a standalone AI Engine campaign sourcing companies on its own, and you know what turns it into one of an agent's lead sources instead.

## Before you begin

* **AI Engine** sits in a sidebar group called **Legacy**, next to **Google My Business** and **AI Campaigns (Legacy)**. That group is hidden until support switches it on for your workspace. The page opens at `/lead-generation-v2` either way.
* Every contact a campaign finds spends credits, and a campaign that runs out mid-search stops at **No Credits**. Check what you are committing to on [What a lead costs in credits](/en/finding-leads/credits-per-lead).

## Steps

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the list">
    Go to <UiPath>Legacy → AI Engine</UiPath>. A workspace with no campaigns yet opens on **Find your next customers** rather than a list, carrying the same two ways in that the banner carries once there is something to show: **Start New Lead Search**, which opens a blank form, and **Ask AI**. On the banner the second one is an unlabelled wand icon next to the button, and **Ask AI** is only its tooltip.

    **Ask AI** opens a short menu with two ways in. **Get AI Suggestion** drafts one with nothing to type, from your company description, your target industries, your office location and the campaigns you already have. **Custom Instructions** adds a sentence of your own on top of all that, then **Get Suggestion**. Both land on **Suggested Campaign**, which shows the proposed name, target query, locations and expected reach. Creating from there also creates a brand-new tag named after the campaign, so it cannot attach itself to an existing agent by accident. Choosing to customize it instead opens the form pre-filled and picks no tag for you.

    Four cards summarize the workspace above the list. **Active campaigns**, **Companies / day** and **Projected leads / month** read off the campaigns that are actually running, so a campaign still at **Pending** counts toward none of the three, and the two throughput cards add up configured pace rather than measuring anything. **Leads this month** is the measured one: it counts every lead sourced by a campaign of this kind, whatever state that campaign is in now.

    Below them, **All**, **Active**, **Paused** and **Finished** narrow the list, a search box narrows it by name, and **Card view** / **Row view** change how each campaign is drawn. The **Active** chip is wider than the **Active campaigns** card: it also returns campaigns at **Pending** and campaigns waiting out today's cap. **Paused** collects **No Credits** and **Limit Reached** alongside the ones you stopped by hand.

    <Screenshot id="finding-leads/ai-engine--list" url="/lead-generation-v2" alt="The AI Engine list: four KPI cards above a grid of campaign cards in Active, Pending and Finished states" caption="The card and the chip disagree on purpose. Active campaigns counts only what is searching; the Active chip also returns Pending." />
  </Step>

  <Step title="Fill in the targeting">
    **Start New Lead Search** opens the form. **Campaign Name** is optional: leave it blank and one is built from your industry terms, or from your hiring roles when there are no industry terms, plus your locations. Set the targeting the same way an agent's source does, covered in full on [Decision-Maker Targeting: filters explained](/en/finding-leads/decision-maker-targeting).

    Nothing is fetched into the right rail until a filter is set. Until then it holds a **Start Your Lead Search** prompt and makes no request.

    <Tip>
      A campaign made here and a source added inside an agent are the same record underneath. An agent's [Sources tab](/en/ai-agents/lead-sources) is assembled by matching tags, with no link stored on either side, so a tag one of your agents already carries puts this campaign on that agent's tab and feeds its outreach. A tag no agent uses leaves the campaign running alone.
    </Tip>

    <Screenshot id="finding-leads/ai-engine--form" url="/lead-generation-v2/new" alt="The AI Engine campaign form as it opens, with Campaign Name, the filter panels and Campaign Configuration on the left and an empty Start Your Lead Search rail on the right" caption="This is a new campaign before any targeting, which is why the rail is empty rather than loading." />
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set its pace, its extras, and create it">
    Under **Campaign Configuration**, **Max. Companies Amount** caps the campaign for its lifetime and **Max. Companies Per Day** caps it per day. Neither is free-form. On a new campaign the total cannot exceed how many companies your filters actually reach, and the daily figure is capped by your subscription, which the field tells you when you go over. **Max. Employees Per Company** decides how many contacts come out of each company, and is the same field an agent's **Add a source** dialog labels **Contacts per company**.

    Two fields have no working default and will block the save: **Max. Companies Amount**, which starts empty, and **Tag Leads**, which needs at least one tag. Every lead the campaign finds is tagged with what you pick there. An agent's **Add a source** dialog fills both in for you, defaulting its **Total companies** to the live estimate and using the agent's own tag, so all it asks for is a filter and a name.

    <Warning>
      **Progressive Employee Search** does take effect on a standalone campaign, and that is the trap. It enriches one contact per company and holds the rest back until that contact's conversation closes. A campaign with no agent behind it has no outreach that can close one, so it stops at a single contact per company instead of the number you set. Turn it on only for a campaign whose tag an agent carries. See [Progressive employee search](/en/finding-leads/progressive-employee-search).
    </Warning>

    Turn on **Also find phone numbers** and every contact whose email is found gets a phone lookup too, at a [higher credit cost](/en/finding-leads/credits-per-lead) that is charged only when a number is actually found. **Campaign Context** is free text describing what you sell, and the optional **Quality Gate** skips companies scoring below a bar you set, pulling no contacts from them at all. Both are covered on [Quality gate and match score](/en/finding-leads/quality-gate-and-match-score). Choose **Create Campaign** to save.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## What happens next

<Check>
  The campaign appears on the list at **Pending**, and its card offers **Start lead generation**.
</Check>

Press it and the campaign goes looking. A source added inside an agent's **Add a source** dialog is the same kind of record and lands at **Pending** too, but that dialog tries to start it for you straight away, best effort. The form here never does, so nothing happens until you press the button.

From there the card reports **Active** while it is searching, including while it waits out today's cap; **Paused** once you stop it; **No Credits** if credits run out partway through; **Limit Reached** once it has analyzed as many companies as **Max. Companies Amount** allows; and **Finished** once every company its filters reach has been analyzed, or once the search comes back empty. **Finished** is terminal: the card's action becomes **View leads** and the campaign will not restart. The states in full are on [Lead sources: add, edit limits, pause](/en/ai-agents/lead-sources).

## Troubleshooting

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Start lead generation fails on a brand-new campaign">
    The campaign reports that it has no searches associated yet. Saving the campaign only queues the work that turns your filters into a search list, so for a moment after creation there is nothing to start. Wait, then press **Start lead generation** again.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="A campaign's status here doesn't match its card on my agent's Sources tab">
    One state, two spellings. A campaign that has analyzed as many companies as **Max. Companies Amount** allows reads **Limit Reached** on this list and **Max Companies** on an [agent's Sources tab](/en/ai-agents/lead-sources). Same fix either place: raise **Max. Companies Amount** and it flips back to **Active** by itself. Do not go looking for a resume button, because the card's only action in that state is **Pause lead generation**.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Progressive Employee Search stopped the campaign at one contact per company">
    That is the switch working, not failing. It spends a credit on the next contact at a company only once the previous contact's conversation closes, and a campaign running on its own has no outreach that can close one. Either add the campaign's tag to an agent, or turn the switch off so every contact is searched up front.
  </Accordion>
