The match score is an AI judgment, from 0 to 100, of how likely a company is to buy from you. The quality gate is an optional setting on a lead source that discards any company scoring below a bar you set, before its contacts are ever searched for.

How it behaves

What gets compared

A company is scored against your own company profile: your name, description, country, locations, target industries and links. The description and the target industries are the two you edit under ; your country and locations come from the details you gave when you set the workspace up. On the other side, the AI reads what we hold about the company: its name, industry, description, size, locations and website, plus its founding year and public rating where we have them. If the source that found it carries its own written description of what you’re looking for, that gets weighed in too. Both descriptions have to be substantial before anything is scored. Yours and the company’s own each have to run past a placeholder line, and a company with next to nothing written about itself is left unscored rather than guessed at. A company whose website could not be read at all never gets that far: it stops with an error, unscored.

Why scores land high

The AI is told to be generous. It is instructed to reserve the bottom of the range for a direct competitor or a company with genuinely no conceivable use for what you sell, and a fixed bonus is then added to its raw judgment before the result is capped at 100. The number on the ring, and the number your gate compares against, is the boosted one. That is worth knowing before you set a bar. The five bands run Poor, Low, Moderate, Good, Excellent, and the slider in the standalone form reads the same bands in the same colors the Companies list uses for its ring. How the ring and its explanation work on a single company is covered on Companies list, match score and discards.

Where you write what you’re looking for

That per-source description is one field wherever you set it, but its label depends on the screen. The standalone form calls it Campaign Context and gives it a panel of its own, sitting next to the quality gate but independent of it: you can write context there without turning any gate on. The create-agent wizard’s Pace step and the Add a source / Edit source dialog call the identical field What are you looking for?, and there it only appears once you turn the quality gate on. Leave it blank in either place and companies still get scored, just against your company profile alone.

What the gate actually skips

Every lead source can carry one optional quality gate, and it starts off. Turn it on and set a bar, and the source’s search still finds companies and still analyzes them one at a time. Scoring happens inside that analysis. What changes is how the analysis ends: a company that comes out below your bar is marked Discarded instead of Analyzed, the same status a company gets when you discard it by hand from the Companies list. The contact search, the one that looks for people inside a company and spends credits on them, only ever starts for a company that lands on Analyzed. A company that fails the gate never has it run: nobody is looked up, and nothing is spent. See How many credits does a lead cost? for what that search charges once it does run. Two things the gate does not do. A company that could not be scored is never discarded by it: with no number there is nothing to compare, and the company passes. And the gate only ever applies to companies a lead source’s search found. Companies you imported, added by hand, or that arrived from website tracking have no source behind them and no gate to clear.

How high the gate can go

No screen lets you drag the gate above 80%. The standalone form’s slider stops exactly there and warns you when you reach it (1). The create-agent wizard’s Pace step and the Add a source / Edit source dialog stop a few points lower still, and say nothing when you get there. Those first two screens back the slider with a saved-value check as well: the standalone form and the source dialog share one validation rule, and it rejects anything over 80% with “The quality gate cannot exceed 80%”. The wizard carries no such rule, so on that screen the slider is the whole limit.

A gate-discarded company sits with everything else you discarded

Failing the gate does not hide a company anywhere special. Switch the Companies list to its Discarded view and it is there next to anything you excluded by hand, with nothing on the row to say which reason put it there. Its score ring is the only clue. Restore treats it exactly like a manual discard: the company flips back to Analyzed, and that status change alone is what starts its contact search, the same one a company that cleared the gate got automatically. So restoring a company you gated out spends the credits its contacts would have cost.

Re-scoring never re-applies the gate

Scoring and gating are separate jobs. The gate is applied in one place only, the analysis pass a lead source’s search runs over a company it just found. Calculate Score, offered on a company that has no score yet, and Refresh score, offered on one that has, both write a new number and a new explanation and touch nothing else. A refreshed score that would have missed your bar leaves the company exactly where it was. Both controls need permission to change companies (update-lead-companies), so a Viewer sees the ring and its explanation but no way to recompute either. The same grant is what Restore needs.
Tightening a gate never cleans up companies you already have, and loosening it never brings any back. Neither move touches a company that is already Analyzed or already Discarded, only what the source does from then on.

Where you’ll meet it

Three screens carry this setting. Two of them belong to an agent: the Pace step of the create-agent wizard, and Add a source or Edit source on an agent that already exists, where it sits under Pace & limits. Both are covered on Lead sources: add, edit limits, pause. The third is the older standalone form’s own Quality Gate panel. That form sits in a sidebar group that stays hidden until someone switches it on for your workspace, so most people never see it; it is covered on AI Engine (standalone lead generation).
